What is dermal filler? How long does it last?

Dermal filler is a physical filler. It is a clear gel made up mostly of hyaluronic acid, which is naturally occurring in our bodies. In general, dermal fillers are available in 3 different densities.

The lowest density filler is best used for lips and superficial fine lines. This generally lasts 3-6 months and requires regular maintenance.

Medium density filler can be used in the lips, cheeks, nasolabial folds, and marionette lines. This filler tends to last 6-12 months and requires semi-regular maintenance.

The highest density filler mimics bone, this is used to create structure around the chin, jaw, and cheek bones. This filler lasts up to 24 months and needs little in the way of maintenance.

I use mostly use the brand EPTQ because it is a premium filler with high cohesivity. This means that in many cases there is much less swelling and bruising than where other brands may be used. However, I will choose the best filler for your treatment depending on several factors at your appointment.

What happens at your appointment?

All appointments start with a full consultation. At most dermal filler appointments, I will also apply a topical numbing cream at the very beginning of your appointment, this allows it ample time to start working.

Once we have together discussed and planned treatment, I will talk you through the risks, potential complications, and after care. I will also provide you with any aftercare items you may not have at home (such as a fresh lip balm and arnica cream.) I will send you a copy of the aftercare instructions so that you have it to hand.

Treatment will begin when you are ready. If you are uncomfortable and want to take a pause, then just let me know. We can stop the treatment at any time.

Once your treatment is complete, I will show you the results and take some pictures. Most appointments last around 1 hour, but they can last longer depending on the number of areas we are treating.
